Seminar MAFF: Gender equality in Arab cinema

Gender equailty, and the striving towards this, has always constituted a huge part of the film culture. This as a driving force for actions and stories, as well as regarding the film industry and market. The subject is global and as topical in the Arab cinema as in the Western.

The starting point for the equality complex of problems that is considered in the Arab cinema, often finds its cause in religious and cultural circumstances and relations, as well as censorship and democracy. The subject of gender equality and norms are as topical and á jour in the Arab cinema, as in the Western, but often with distinguished practical conditions. There is great number of Arab, female and male, film makers from the Arab world that drives the subject of equality and questioning of the traditional role of the woman in the Arab society. Women still has a subordinated position in the film industry, with more films being produced, directed and written by men than by women. Hero, as well as antihero figures of women is being reproduced steadily being reproduced in the Arab cinema. The premise of changing this condition, is a constant and active struggling discussion for increasing equality.

This year Malmo Arab Film Festival present the programme ”Womens film” where the starting point is to accentuate the films where gender equality and role of the women constitutes the core of the film.
