Welcome to The Rift! - Use of Force and Assent

20 september, 2014 - 09:00 - 22 september, 2014 - 17:00

When thirty-five year old Anastasio Hernandez Rojas was beaten and tasered to death by the border patrol, an incident that the San Diego coroner’s office ruled was a homicide, he was one of more than a dozen migrants who have been killed by the border patrol under questionable circumstances in the past two years. This virtual reality documentary depicts the dehumanization of migrants at the US – Mexican border through a revolutionary technique that employs gaming platforms and immersive virtual reality technologies to tell the narrative. Through the use of fully-tracked goggles and a rich soundscape, the audience feels like they are on scene the harrowing night of Anastasio’s death.

Using eye-witness mobile phone video, audio, and photographs to carefully reconstruct what happened, the story is portrayed in life-size detail using advanced technologies including high resolution goggles, digital modeling real time graphics and compelling soundscapes. Harnessing the sense of presence, of being there, that comes with full body tracking, the piece allows audience members to engage as if they were nearby that night. In this way, Use of Force provides a deeper understanding of the brutal murder of a helpless man trying to return to his family who had been living peacefully for more than two decades on the US side of the border.

When the military took control of Chile in the coup of September 1973, it was the culmination of Cold War tensions, international political influence and internal conflict. For the personnel of the Army, it was an event that changed the direction of their lives.

The ‘Caravan of Death’ that travelled the country by helicopter conducting executions of military detainees in the immediate aftermath of the coup was a mechanism to install terror into the community. It was also a mechanism to demonstrate the force of the central authorities to military staff outside the capital, and, in making them complicit in the actions of the junta, to ensure their loyalty. Thirty years later, the repercussions of those events still play out daily – in courts, in politics, and in the homes of Chilean people.

This autobiographical immersive documentary puts the user in the footsteps of my father, who in 1973 was a 22-year-old army officer stationed in the north of Chile, on the day when the Caravan of Death came to his regiment. By putting the audience on the scene alongside my father using virtual reality technology, Assent provides the audience an opportunity to engage personally with the events and emotions of that day, through his eyes, and mine.
